Msaken, deux registres (2009)

Sound installation by Gilles Aubry for the Exhibition The Interpreter, Les Complices* gallery, Zurich,
6-28 november 2009

The sound installation Msaken – deux registres is based
on a sound recording captured on a stroll in the
streets of a popular residential area in the Town of
Msaken in Tunisia.

The recording reveals a quiet atmosphere ponctuated
by everyday sounds and the reactions of local
inhabitants curious to know about the author and his
microphone.

The audio fragment presented in this installation has
been processed in order to divide its frequencies in
two distinct registers – low and high. Distributed over
four loudspeakers at the extremities of the exhibition
room, these registers articulate the space dynamically,
according to variations in the recorded soundscape.
