Multichannel audio piece commissioned by the Kontraste Festival 2011, Krems.

L’Amplification des Âmes (The Amplification of Souls) is an audio essay on the amplified religious soundscape of Kinshasa in Congo. Aubry documented the sound of christian neo-pentecostal church ceremonies in Kinshasa. The use of powerful sound amplification systems is an
essential element that contributes to the creation of new ‘modern religious identities’ and connects to traditional ritual elements.

Gilles Aubry uses this material to create a new composition for the Acousmonium, a 80-loudspeakers orchestra from the Groupe de Recherche Musicale (GRM) in Paris. As product of Western late-modern ideology, the Acousmonium stand as a material counterpoint to the tradi-modern identities echoed by the Kinshasa loudspeaker sounds.
